I spy…. (The Cab Week)

So it’s post number five of The Cab week, we’re almost done. This post will be quite short but I read this interview this morning and I was going to share it via my Facebook page and Twitter anyway, so I just thought why not include it as part of The Cab week?

So…check out this great interview with Alex DeLeon, from Digital Spy :
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/thesound/a407030/ones-to-watch-the-cab.html

It’s so great that the band is getting more press in the UK ahead of the release of Symphony Soldier, and I thought that this was a really good interview. So if you’ve never heard of the band, go get acquainted, and if you’re a fan, I’m sure you’ll enjoy reading it. One’s to watch?…you took the words right out of our mouths.

Finally… (The Cab Week)

So it looks like The Cab are finally getting some, muchly anticipated, UK recognition. If you’re a UK fan then you definitely know that sadly, the band is not as well known here as in the US, and they’ve never played a show over here. So unless you have the means to fly to the states, this has been a very long time coming.

After their performance on, or in, the London Eye for competition winners last week, they were featured in UK tabloid ‘The Sun’. (see below:)

The article in The Sun newspaper.

And as said above a longer article was posted on The Sun online, which also features videos of the guys performing their new single ‘Bad’ and covering Ed Sheeran’s ‘Lego House’. There are also some quotes from both Alex’s. You can check that out here: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/music/4534696/The-Cab-perform-gig-on-London-Eye.html

So it all seems to be coming together; just a day after the London Eye performance singer, Alex DeLeon tweeted a picture of the band’s “poster in London”. And as well as that, leading single ‘Bad’ from their album Symphony Soldier which is set for UK release next monday, is also getting national airplay on stations like Capital radio, so…get requesting.

For all of the fans that have been waiting a fair few years to hear news of The Cab spread to the UK, it looks like we may have finally got our wish. Let’s hope that this is the start of something big.

He’s a Wonder (The Cab Week)

So like I said in my ‘The Cab week’ intro, for a uni assignment last year we had to write a short piece on someone’s voice, and surprise, I did mine on Alexander DeLeon, so as it’s ‘The Cab Week’ and all, I thought I’d post it.

He’s a Wonder

I pressed play and was immediately captivated by what I heard.  The upbeat positive sound drew me in but the voice stopped me in my tracks, amazed. Smooth and effortless, but can turn raw and husky to ratchet up the power; Alex DeLeon of The Cab sounds flawless and almost hypnotic. You can feel the emotion and soulfulness behind the songs coming through in every note. This man means what he sings; he’s heartfelt, honest, and utterly mesmerizing.

Able to hit the Justin Timberlake-esque high notes live as well as on record, Alex is one of a dying breed: the artist that doesn’t hide behind auto-tune or gimmicks, but actually has talent; the ability to deliver a message in such a way that can move an audience to tears or make them keep dancing. From the catchy upbeat sounds of ‘Lala’ to the poignant beauty of ‘Vegas Skies’, it is quite clear that this man’s talent is something to be reckoned with.

…and if that doesn’t tempt you to check out their 2nd album Symphony Soldier – which is set for release in the UK on September 24th – What will? hahaha.

If We Ever Meet Again… (The Cab Week)

Hi everyone and welcome to my first post of ‘The Cab week’, and if you don’t know what I’m talking about scroll down and read my previous post! 🙂

Okay so, I entered the competition to meet the lads in London but unfortunately, didn’t win. But one of Symphony Soldier UK street teams posted on Twitter that Singer and Marshall would be at the London Eye at 11am the next day, so naturally I went along. The Cab are one of my favourite bands – I’ve met singer twice when he’s visited London, but I’ve never met Marshall, Joey or Dave before so I figured, why not? sadly we don’t really see a lot of them over here.

I got to the London Eye a little late, but spotted Marshall and singer – who recognised me immediately and was like, “Hi, how’re you? How long’s it been? 6,7,8,9 months?” as I’d been at the last London meet up that he did in March, with Brock Falfas. And the fact that he remembered me was really awesome, because they must meet so many fans so it’s pretty nice. He was walking to the drinks/food stand and I was walking to the tables to find a place to stand comfortably, as I was on crutches so it was pretty hard to just stop, so we were trying to say hi whilst walking in opposite directions which was pretty funny. I sai hi to Alex Marshall and asked for a photo with him, and gave him a hug. He was really lovely, thanking me and signing a birthday card for my friends with the message “Happy Birthday, I love you!” inside.

With Alex Marshall

I also got (another!) photo with Alex DeLeon, and chatted to him for a bit. “I’ve got such a weird sense of Déjà vu from when we were over there.” He said to me pointing to the benches where we all gathered back in March last time he was over. He was also saying he was so jet-lagged that he’d been up since 4am and couldn’t tell if he was really over-tired or wide awake. I really wanted to buy him a coffee and give it to him but he was saying to Marshall that coffee was gross, so that idea went out the window. Then someone mentioned pro plus and he was like “I need some of that.” to which  replied, “just don’t take it and drink red bull and wonder why you’ve passed out.”

With Alex DeLeon

I also asked him about the Skype interview he suggested back in March and said he must have not seen my tweets, and he was really apologetic like “yeah I get a lot of tweets, sorry.” which I thought was super sweet and I said if he’s really busy not to worry about it, so he said if I spoke to one of the guys they were with we could sort something. But before I could do that I was approached by a red-head woman who asked if I was friends with the band or if I was there with friends, and I just said I saw on Twitter that they’d be here and I’m a really big fan, so I thought come say hi. I also mentioned what Alex had just said about speaking to their guy to organise an interview, as I run a blog, and she handed me a card and said to drop her an email. Turns out her name was Paula and she was the director of PR company Digital Rebel, who have names like Kelly Clarkson and Kings Of Leon on their projects list on their website: www.digitalrebelpr.com

The guys couldn’t really stay around long as they had the meet and greet with competition winners, which involved a trip on the London eye while the guys played some tracks for them in the pod. So they said they’d be back in a bit, and I was like “Have fun!” and Singer clapped me on the shoulder which I thought was in a ‘thank you for coming’ gesture. I did hear Marshall asking where he’d put the keyboard and Singer crouched down in front of him with his arms out and replied, I’ll hold it like this and balance and sing, which was really funny, but from the looks of the picture that Singer tweeted it looks like they solved that problem.

The picture that @alexanderdeleon tweeted.

I waited for them with some other girls I met that day, and we got on pretty well, and then when they got off Marshall came back and thanked us for waiting and said they were headed out. So we walked down with them, and got talking to the camera guy that was there and turned out he worked for The Sun online and the stuff was going on the ‘Bizzare’ showbiz page, so it’s awesome that the band are getting some UK exposure.

They both said bye, hugged us and we thanked each other for coming down, and singer said to me “See I told you I’d see you again, and I have, and I will.” and the PR lady Paula – who I was standing next to – agreed and said “Yep he’s said it now, I heard him.” To which I replied “and hopefully I’ll get to interview you at some point, hopefully.” and he gave me a little smile and was like “You will, you will.”

We stood and watched them being filmed getting into a black cab and driving away, and then left. But then on my way back I saw them come around the block and get out of the cab, so as they did I called out “back so soon?” and Alex Marshall smiled “yup.” And I for one, hope they will be.

NB –I don’t know what’s happening with my speech marks, some of them should be open speech marks but no matter what I do they come up as closed speech marks. I don’t know why, I’ve tried typing them in again, I’ve tried deleting the sentence and writing it again, I’ve tried copy and pasting an open speechmark over the closed speechmark, but no joy. So sorry if it’s confusing! I can actually use punctuation! haha 🙂

Welcome to… The Cab Week!

Hey everyone!

So I wanted to do a blog post in the run-up to The Cab’s Symphony Soldier album becoming available in the UK.

For a uni assignment last year we had to write a short piece on someone’s voice, and surprise, I did mine on Alexander DeLeon, which I was planning on posting. Then, last week monday (Sept. 10th) I met Singer and Marshall in London. Unlike the last two times I’ve met singer, it was a bit more of a quick meet as they had competition winners to meet and things to do, so I was wondering if I should post something, or just direct people to my Facebook to see the pictures, as it would’ve been a short post. But I wanted to write something as I’ve blogged about the last two times I met singer and this time I got to meet Singer and Marshall.

So at first I thought, ‘hey why not combine the two into one post? it’s all related’. Then I started to think it may be too much Cab-ness in one post, so I had a friend read it and she noticed that I have a few Cab related posts on here, and mid-read she must’ve got a flash of inspiration, because all of a sudden she gasped and exclaimed: “Why don’t you do ‘The Cab week?'” And at first I burst out laughing, and then I replied “What like in the run up to the release?” but when I thought about it, it’s actually not a bad idea.

So henceforth, this is now Cab week! To celebrate the UK release of Symphony Soldier next monday (24th,) I’ll be posting The Cab related posts from today until Monday. So… get out your guns, battles begun. 🙂

Meeting Alex DeLeon…(again.)

Hey everyone,

Ok so first I just wanted to say, I haven’t posted in over a month now and the simple reason for that is that I’ve just been too busy with things that need my immediate attention. And even though I have things that I want to blog about, blogging has had to take a back seat so I could do other things that absolutely have to be done. That being said, this blog could not wait, and as I got up pretty early this morning I have some free time to do it. 🙂

So as you can probably tell from the title I met Alex DeLeon – the singer of The Cab – again whilst he was in London on Monday. Singer has been on a European adventure for the past week or so, and has been meeting fans in cities along the way. Singer tweeted on Saturday that he would be hanging out with fans in Cardiff on Sunday, and asked if anybody wanted to hang in London on Monday. He then tweeted on Sunday that he would be meeting fans outside the London Eye at 5pm.

When Monday finally came around there was so much excitement going on, I was ready half an hour early and ready to leave, knots of excitement and anticipation in my stomach, all I wanted to do was get there – I’d rather be super early than late. As it turns out, I was super early; getting there with half an hour to spare.
I texted my friend to make sure she was still coming and just sat and waited, and when she got there a girl sitting next to me turned to me and asked, “This is going to sound weird, but are you waiting for Alex from The Cab?” to which I obviously replied yes, and we all started talking – it’s great how music unites people.

When Alex turned up he wasn’t as far up as we were so we stood and walked over to where he was only to meet him walking back our way. I gave a shy little wave and he was like “Hey, how are you guys?” and gave me a hug. With a guitar in hand he walked with us and was asking how we were, how our weeks had been and vice versa. He said he’d had one of the best weeks ever and proceeded to tell us where he’d been in the past few days. (Dublin for St Patrick’s day and Mother’s day they were in Cardiff – where he and Brock Falfas, who designs merch, walked round a castle with a bunch of fans and according to Brock even “slayed some dragons”- if you were wondering.)

We all gathered around where Singer sat with the guitar and it turned into, almost like a Q and A, I think most people were too shy to make it like a full on conversation. He asked us if we had questions, we asked, he answered. I asked if I could give him something, and gave him a little bit of paper with my blog URL on, I explained how I’d been in touch with the band’s manager and interviewed the band via email for this very blog. He seemed really interested and said he would definitely have a look. (So Singer if you’re reading this at all, Hi :)!)  I also added that hopefully I’ll get to interview the band in person one day, and asked when they were coming to play here. (“That’s why you should come play here, so I can interview you guys before the show”) to which he said they were hoping to get here in Summer/Fall. He also said that if I wanted to stick around I could ask him a few questions later, to which I was thrilled, he then went on to say that if any of us ever needed anything from him – like interviews – he was there for us.

After a while he sung a few songs for us and asked if we had any requests – I asked if he could sing Endlessly – to which he said “I’ll sing it to you.”

I also couldn’t help feeling a little bad for him, there we all were stood around him in awe just wanting to hear what he had to say, but you could tell at times he didn’t know what to say as he didn’t want to bore us, which, for future reference Mr. DeLeon, we were all there to see you, you could never bore us :).
He kept saying that we were “So shy,” and asked what he could to do “liven us up.” to which one woman from Vegas replied “they’re polite English people.”
Though when one woman said she was quiet and reserved, Alex invited her to sit next to him and put his arms around her, and at one point, almost sat on her.
He also commented at one point that “I need to marry a chick who will travel with me.” To which everyone went quiet and I piped up “I’ll travel with you :)” and he was like, “Will you?”

We also found out that Alex has a little bit of an obsession with eyes. He kept telling people how they had amazing eyes, to which I complimented him and said that his own eyes were amazing. Someone also asked if we could see his hair but, in the nicest way possible, he said no. Though he did take part of it from his hat and show us what it looked like before tucking it back in and saying “So, it just chills in the hat.” – but Alex, you do know that constantly wearing a hat can make you go bald quicker?!

Singer shared some anecdotes with us, like that they’d been to Camden that morning which he’d thought was “awesome.” How Brock has bought 3 pairs of the same glasses (see picture below: ) which he then whipped out in both hands to hold up and show us, so he had a back up back up pair – apparently they were on offer.

He bought THREE pairs!

Alex also told us how he gets mistaken for other people a lot, Bam Margera, Justin Timberlake – to which he was surprised – and at one point even Ville Valo of HIM.
“This woman just ran up to me, grabbed my face and kissed me, and I was like Whoaa! Then her boyfriend walked up to me and was like ‘oh my god I’m so sorry, she’s a little bit intoxicated, she thought you were the singer from HIM, then was like ‘is it ok if I tell her that you are and make her night? So some chick thinks she kissed the singer of HIM, but it was just me.”

He also spoke to us about the whole deal with labels and whether they are now signed or not – which they are – and I commented on how, by refusing to compromise their artistic integrity with the last album Symphony Soldier, and leaving their previous label, “that has gained you a lot more respect from, I can’t speak for everyone here, but at least for me.” Which he thanked me for and said that, that period of time was really hard and confusing time and if it wasn’t for people like us and our support he doesn’t know what would’ve happened to the band. Well I for one can say thank god you came out the other side.
There also may be some truth to the rumour of the lads working with Justin Timberlake, Alex said “Everytime I see him we always say let’s get in the studio,” but apparently when it comes to it, the band is either on tour or Justin is off shooting a movie, so it’s not worked out yet, but watch this space.

We also were told how one of the former members of The Cab is now in Slash’s band, of which he said, “You can’t really get mad.” He said that Slash was at a Cab show at one point and “Slash does not like The Cab, ya’know?” I asked if he spoke with him at all and he said, “I didn’t talk to him, I saw him and kinda head nodded, but I didn’t speak to him, he probably would’ve decked me.” He adds quietly.

Alex asked Brock to film little bits of the day – here’s a link to Alex’s Keek of singing Endlessly for us-   and he wanted a group picture with everyone so he could tweet that too, and soon enough we were all up in little clusters of groups with Alex taking pictures, signing things, recording videos and generally being an all round amazingly sweet guy. Whilst we were waiting for him, Brock came over to speak to us and asked our opinion on a new t-shirt design for the band, and took some pics with us after thinking my friend was taking a photo and jumping in the back.

Heyyy, it’s me and Brock Falfas.

When he came to us he said he remembered us from the Top Man visit and we got pictures with him and he signed my phone.

He also sang some more songs for us and sang ‘That 70’s song’ while a fan played guitar for him, you also get to see Brock having a dance.

He also asked a girl who wrote and sang to sing one of her original songs for us, and said “This is a bit awkward for me so it’s great to hear someone else sing.”

And after a good two hours of hanging out with us all Alex and Brock had to go, so they both came round and hugged us all and said goodbye. I said I’d tweet Alex the link to my blog and he was like “Do you have Skype? Can you do a Skype interview?” and obviously I said yes, and he replied, “Let’s do that.” So fingers crossed that happens!

But it was an undoubtedly great day and I just want to say thank you – even though he was telling us not to thank him and thanking us for coming down – to Alex for taking time out of his holiday to meet fans and spend that amount of time with us. You are such an amazingly down to earth and genuine guy and it was so sweet to see how humbled you were by all of our attention. You have a way with words that is amazing, so keep doing what you do best because you are so inspiring.

Everyone.

Living Louder: My Interview with The Cab

“The reason we are a band is the fans,” say Las Vegas based band The Cab. “Without them, we’d be sitting on the couch playing songs for each other. We still can’t believe it when people get tattoos or write letters about how the songs have helped them through hard times. It’s very humbling.”

The three-piece – made up of vocalist Alex DeLeon, guitarist/pianist Alex Marshall, and newest member Joey Thunder on bass– released their second album Symphony Soldiers on August 23rd 2010. A full three years after their first album Whisper War, and the fans were starving for new music from them. “In the US, we were blown away with the initial response. We didn’t know what to expect really.” Say the band, “It’s amazing that people in countries we haven’t had the chance to visit yet are so passionate about the music. For example the fan club in the Philippines. We hope to get there next year, but it’s support like that, that keeps us going. ” And the boys like to thank the fans for that in any way they can, like recently including things in Symphony Soldier pre-order packages like phone calls and handwritten lyrics.

So why the super long break? The band cites various reasons but say that “We wanted to make sure it was the album we wanted to make, without bending to the pressures of anyone else. We promise not to take so long for the next one.” Careful boys, we’ll hold you to that.

Still The Cab, and just as addictive as Whisper War, Symphony Soldiers has less of the Fall Out Boy/Panic! At The Disco-esque influence, but still retains everything we’ve come to associate with The Cab; the lyrics are still as honest and beautiful, the melodies are still as catchy and dance-able, but there is definitely an increased air of maturity that shows how much the boys have grown  “as songwriters, musicians and as people ” making this record. To add to that you can definitely recognise the amount of time and effort spent, to make sure the record was as polished as it could be in the final cut.

During the making of Symphony Soldiers the guys also got to work with some well known artists in the industry, such as Adam Levine (Maroon 5), Bruno Mars, Martin Johnson (Boys Like Girls) and Pete Wentz (Fall Out Boy.) So how was that for the guys? “We have always admired and respected the music these guys have made. Working with talents like this you really learn a lot about the craft and what it takes to have long and successful careers. It was an honour.” They say it also helped to create “different and unique songs – Everyone brings something new to the mix.”

And while they say their favourite song to play live depends on the night, they do say that “Living Louder is a great track, and one we love playing. We write a lot of songs about love and lust, but this one has more of a hopeful and uplifting feeling.”

As much as Symphony Soldier is an undoubtedly exceptional album, made by a band who wouldn’t compromise their artistic integrity at any cost, there are also some songs that didn’t make it to the final cut of Symphony Soldier. We want to hear more from The Cab don’t we? Tracks such as ‘Falling Up’ – which was leaked online – and ‘Crown’ – which Alex DeLeon treated us to a sneak peek of  on his blog – but are there any plans to release them? “We have some tricks up our sleeves for those songs.” They reply, “you’ll just have to wait and see.” Oh you teases!

Whilst making this album the band have had their struggles, parting ways with their label Fuelled By Ramen, as well as band mate Alex Johnson before the album was due for release. “We have had our fair share of obstacles as a band, but giving up was never an option. We love what we do, and no matter happened, this album was going to come out. Sometimes, people go in different directions, and it’s nobody’s fault.”

Now with bassist Joey Thunder an official member, it’s a new chapter for the band and the lads seem as tight as ever, having recently played shows with the likes of All Time Low, Mayday Parade, and Simple Plan. As well as being booked to play Soundwave 2012, co-headlining a tour with their “great friends” The Summer Set, and  heading over to Japan late last year. These boys have been busy! “We love to travel, especially internationally. Sold out shows, great fans, all around good times. Especially getting to hang with The Summer Set.” So it looks like this could be the band’s moment, and they’re grabbing it with both hands deservedly.

But  – being from the UK – the question on a lot of people’s lips is, are there any plans for a UK tour? “It’s been in the works for a long time, just need to have the right shows booked and make it all work. But its high on our priority. ” Again with the teasing! I guess we’ll just have to keep everything crossed. But wherever you are in the world, if you can make it to a Cab show I would;  when asked what their live show is like, their cheeky reply will no doubt make you smile. “Joey may or may not be playing naked. You will just have to come and find out. ”
So, that’s appreciative down-to-earth guys, amazing music and a possibly naked Joey Thunder… how can you resist that?

Why I Chose To Write About Music.

Ok so I’ll be honest I was a little bit inspired to write this after reading Alex DeLeon’s recent blog post on music, which you can check that out here: http://symphonysoldier.com/
But this subject has always been one that I’ve thought about and is close to my heart, perhaps even more so now considering I’m training to be a music journalist. My love of music is always something I’ve never truly been able to express or define, but I’ll try my best. I’m learning.

I love music. I know that’s pretty over-said nowadays but I truly cannot find another word that encompasses just how I feel about music. Music in my mind is something you can hold close to your heart, it can be that friend to you when you feel at your lowest, but it can also be a painful reminder of the past. Music has helped me through some hard times and there are certain songs I can’t listen to now without smiling (or dancing around to like a child,) and some songs I can’t listen to now period, but music is undeniably a huge part of my life.

I find it amazing that musicians and singers-normal people like you or I- can produce something so simple yet so multi layered that it can affect so many different people in so many different ways. But it happens. It blows my mind how people can put such beautiful melodies together and fit everything like pieces of a puzzle so all the elements of a song work harmoniously with one another. I find it mind boggling that someone elses lyrics, words, thoughts can be articulated so beautifully and can voice a listeners’ own thoughts they haven’t been able to put into words, or capture a feeling you can’t quite put your finger on, and because of this can be related to by an audience so deeply.

It’s funny how something that goes into your ears, something you can’t even see or hold, can help you feel as though you are not alone, can make you believe again, can give you hope. It does all different things for different people and I truly believe that the effect music has on the individual, at least in my case, will never be able to be accurately translated into words as it is the feeling that that music or song or album evokes in you, and it’s yours only and is very hard to explain, unless to someone who maybe shares your opinion on that certain song or album that will understand, and even then you don’t know if what they feel is even close to what you feel. It’s like falling in love, and in a sense it is, falling in love with music, with a band, with an artist, with a song, with an album.

But music also has its flipside and it can be that painful reminder of a memory that you’d rather forget. But saying that, it can be like the therapy you use to help you through that painful memory or time, if you chose to focus on that and take something positive from it instead of dwelling on the negative. I’m not saying music helps every situation, it completely depends on the individual and what helps you and gives you comfort but for me, that has always been music.

I also love the fact that there is no definitive right or wrong in music, there is only opinion. I dislike all the hate that goes around in music now, like if you like a certain band or song people are negative about it. But the truth is music is your opinion, not any body else’s, your own opinion on how that song makes you feel or what it does to you when it enters your ears. Anybody can write a great track. ANYBODY. and I’ve started to really dislike the phrase guilty pleasure (I know I’ve used it on here a few times) because honestly, I’m not guilty about anything I like because I like it for a reason, whether it’s just because it’s catchy or whether it goes deeper and means something to me and I don’t think people should be made to feel bad for liking something that someone else doesn’t.

Music can unite people, and sadly it can divide people too, but it is the one thing that is constant and is a common ground as it is something we’ve all come into contact with and something we all have a certain opinion on, whether it holds a deep connection for you or not.

Music will never be just music to me, it will always be too weighted and mean too much to me to be just anything. It will always hold a special place in my heart as it has always been there, from the feeling you get when someone new comes into your life, to when you start to fall for someone, being in love, the bad breakups, the heartaches, the stressful times when you need a lift…
When you’re walking to a gig and you feel the electricity in the air and you just know you’re all going to the same place, the anticipation you get waiting for your favourite band to take the stage, the goosebumps you get where you hear the crowd chanting along with a song, music is the cause of that. The music has effected people like that.

I will always be thankful to music and to the awesome musicians who make it and have made the songs that have kept me going; always know that you are exceptional. Whether or not you believe that, I do.

It’s ‘BAD’…The Cab’s new video.

Ok so I know this is pretty late but I haven’t had internet for a while and have had a few things going on so I’ve been pretty busy, but I did want to write something on this.

The Cab recently released their music video for their newest single ‘Bad’ from their new album Symphony Soldier. It premiered last month and was met with praise as well as criticism among fans.

Now, while the video is a bit racy, I feel the story behind it fits the lyrics and mood of the song completely.

I like the texts at the start to set up the story: an almost-couple reminiscing about how they met and the transpiring events, to the tune of “It feels just like it was yesterday.”
The mood of the language used and pauses between texts shows that there is more to the story which piqued my curiosity and made me want to watch more.

The use of pictures rather than a physical re-enactment of past events were also a good technique, as it gave you enough glimpses to fill you in on the story without making it too heavy and clogging the video up; it’s like why spend 30 words explaining something when you could do it in 3?

The mood of the video then switches as you are taken back to the couple’s- played by Alex DeLeon and Angel Porrino – first conversations, which made me smile and think ‘awww!’ as you would at the start of any new relationship.

That is until the racy pictures of Ms. Porrino start gracing the screen and the texts become racier, at which point there was no other suitable reaction but to laugh in kind-of shock. I was not expecting that! You even see Alex DeLeon put his hand to his face and laugh in reaction to one of the pictures, which was funny to me because it was exactly my reaction at one point in the video!

However, I’d like to point out now that it is still tame and done tastefully. It’s more funny racy than anything else.

The song fits very well with the video. From the timing of the pictures as well as the actual lyrics. For example, “I want a bad girl baby bad, I want it bad.” -That’s exactly what Angel Porinno is in this video, she is the bad girl and that is shown throughout.
Or, “I want a girl who stays out too late and when I call she doesn’t answer the phone.” Which she does near the end of the video, and the sudden change of attitude made me frown and think, ‘Hang on what’s going on there?’

I found the end of the video a little sad, I know some people found it funny but I did feel bad for Alex. Near the end of the video you see his texts start to get no replies, then right at the end a third person is introduced into the texting and tells Alex, straight up, “Stop texting my girlfriend.” The video ending on him sending a picture of himself giving Alex the finger.
This added to the cringey kind-of shock factor, and also lead to ambiguities as it leaves you thinking, was she texting Alex while her boyfriend was out of town? Or did she get bored waiting for Alex and find someone else to fool around with?

All in all it is a very good video and everything fits well together.
I came across a comment somewhere that said it looked like it was made on Moviemaker, or people saying that they didn’t expect this from The Cab, or it isn’t classy. Look at what goes on in the mainstream music industry now days with girls/women wearing next to nothing and engaging in far too sexualised dance routines a lot of the time. This video is not nearly as bad as some things you see these days, and at least it had relevance to the song and its lyrics and wasn’t just a meaningless ‘sex sells’ attitude.

As for the quality of the video, I think that it is done well and uses some very good techniques, and in my opinion, injected some life into telling the story. It was funny, it was sexy, and I felt that it was fresh. It also proves that you do not need a lot of money or massive mainstream status behind you to produce amazing music and a quality video.

Well done to The Cab, you boys have done us proud with the video as well as with Symphony Soldier as a whole. Definitely worth the wait. Can’t wait to hear more from you and hopefully see you in the UK very soon!

NOTE: In the video Alex is still called Alex, so that’s why I’ve said things like “I did feel bad for Alex.” I understand they are not an actual couple and that they are both playing characters and acting in the video, just thought I’d point that out.

The Cab – Symphony Soldier Album Review

Ok, so I know I’ve been blogging, facebooking and particularly tweeting about this band alot for a little while now, and that’s just what happens when I find out about a band that I really come to love, I want everyone to know about them and help them get more people listening to their stuff.

But yes, the day is finally here…The Cab’s highly anticipated new album Symphony Soldier was released today after a three year gap following previous offering Whisper War.

Now personally I am quite lucky as I found out about The Cab just before the start of the summer through a friend, and since checked out all their previous material and bought previous album Whisper War (which has been my jam, particularly in the car pretty much since!) S0 in comparison I haven’t had too long to wait – I seriously can’t imagine how the fans from back before 2008 are feeling today- but these last few weeks I know I’ve been itching to get my hands on Symphony Soldier… and let me say, it was definitely worth the wait.

Still The Cab and just as catchy as Whisper War, the lyrics are still as honest and beautiful but there is definitely an increased air of maturity that shows how much the boys have grown making this record.

Album opener ‘Angel With A Shotgun’, and ‘La la’ make me want to get up and dance, while I can imagine ‘Her Love Is My Religion’ will be great to see played live mainly because of the chorus (:D), whilst ‘Endlessly’ and ‘Lovesick Fool’ have the poignancy and beautiful piano work to add to the beauty, and I love the lyrics to ‘Another Me’ and ‘Living Louder’. Also Singer’s voice has evidently matured and is so smooth it glides through the songs, hitting higher notes just as well as lower ones, a perfect match to the music.

Like Whisper War ALL the songs on the album are great and this band definitely has EVERYTHING: the polished sound, the amazing, meaningful, honest lyrics, everything fits together complimenting eachother, and each are evidently amazingly skilled at what they do, and from what I’ve seen they’re really nice guys who love their fans, to boot…so why wouldn’t we love them?

You can buy Symphony Soldier and listen for yourself over at ITunes (outside the US) or on their webstore or if you happen to go catch the guys at a show. And if you haven’t heard of The Cab and you like any of the other bands I’ve mentioned on this blog or if you like tuneful rock music that you can sing and dance-along to, you may just like these guys…so WHAT are you waiting for?
